A lot of people put off seeing a podiatrist.
Sometimes it’s because they’re not sure the problem is serious enough. Sometimes it’s because they don’t know what actually happens in a podiatry appointment. And sometimes it’s simply because they haven’t found a clinic that feels like the right fit.
If you’re in Albany Creek or surrounding North Brisbane suburbs and you’ve been wondering whether to book, this is for you.
This is a straightforward introduction to who My Family Podiatry is, how we work, and what you can expect if you walk through our doors.
No hard sell. Just clarity.
The Idea Behind My Family Podiatry
My Family Podiatry was built around a simple principle: we treat people, not just their feet.
That means we do not just look at the painful spot and send you on your way. We take the time to understand what is going on, why it has developed, and what makes sense for you moving forward.
Good podiatric care should be practical. It should be explained clearly. And it should fit into real life.
We see patients across the full age spectrum. From a toddler with flat feet, to a teenager with sports injuries, to adults managing chronic heel pain, to seniors needing assistance with nail care.
The goal at every appointment is the same. Understand the problem. Explain it properly. Agree on a realistic plan.
Meet the Team
We are a team of four podiatrists, which means you can usually get an appointment that suits your schedule, including Saturday mornings.
Our team includes:
Cameron Bennet
Nathan Fittock
Paul Ovaska
Helen Woodward
Each clinician brings slightly different interests and experience, but together we cover the full scope of podiatry. That means whether you are dealing with a sports injury, an ingrown toenail, diabetic foot care, children’s foot concerns, or ongoing biomechanical issues, you can be managed within our clinic.
You can learn more about each team member on their individual profile pages.
Having multiple podiatrists also means continuity of care. If one clinician is away, another can step in seamlessly.
Who Comes to See Us
Rather than listing services, it’s easier to explain this through real-life scenarios we see every week in Albany Creek.
A parent has been noticing their child limping slightly after Saturday footy. At first it seems minor but by Monday they are still complaining of pain. They still want to play, but they are wincing after training and sitting out more often.
Often this turns out to be a growth-related issue such as Sever’s syndrome, especially during a growth spurt. The good news is that when caught early, it is very manageable. The key is adjusting load, footwear and strengthening before the pain becomes persistent.
Most parents feel relieved once they understand what is happening and that it is not “just growing pains.”
This is the person who has been stretching their calves, rolling a frozen water bottle under their foot and buying different shoes for months.
They might be training for a half marathon, doing Parkrun on weekends or just trying to stay active. The heel pain is worse first thing in the morning, settles during the run, then flares up again later.
They have probably Googled plantar fasciitis. They may have even tried a few online exercises. But it is not improving.
In these cases, we look deeper. Load management, footwear, calf strength, foot posture and running mechanics all matter. Often small changes make a significant difference, particularly when paired with structured rehabilitation or shockwave therapy if needed.
The Person Managing an Ingrown Toenail at Home
→ /ingrown-toenails
This person has been trimming the nail shorter and shorter, cutting down the sides, hoping it will finally stop digging in.
Sometimes it settles for a few weeks. Then it flares up again. It becomes red, swollen and painful in closed shoes.
They often say, “I didn’t think it was bad enough to see someone.”
By the time they come in, the nail border is inflamed and tender. In many cases, we can settle it conservatively. In others, a simple in-clinic procedure permanently solves the issue.
What most people regret is waiting.
The Retiree Who Finds Nail Care Increasingly Difficult
We see many older patients who are otherwise independent and active but find bending to cut their nails increasingly difficult.
It may be reduced flexibility, arthritis in the back or hips, or simple balance concerns.
Often they have been “managing” with difficulty for months. Nails become thick, harder to trim and sometimes uncomfortable in shoes.
Regular, safe podiatry care removes the stress and risk. It also allows us to monitor circulation, skin health and early pressure areas that could become bigger problems later.
The Person Living With Diabetes Who Has Been Meaning to Book
→ /diabetic-foot-health-assessments
This person knows foot checks are important. Their GP may have mentioned it. They may even have had a previous ulcer or infection scare.
But life gets busy.
We regularly see patients who say, “I should have done this sooner.” A structured diabetic foot assessment checks circulation, nerve sensation, pressure areas and skin integrity.
The goal is prevention. Early detection is always easier than managing complications.
The Adult With Persistent Foot or Lower Limb Pain
This person has tried new shoes. They have stretched. They have rested. They may even have seen someone previously.
But the pain keeps returning.
It might be ankle pain after long days standing, shin pain during running, or knee discomfort that seems linked to foot posture.
Often there is an underlying biomechanical driver that has never been fully assessed. Identifying that root cause changes the direction of treatment entirely.
What Happens at Your First Visit
One of the most common concerns people have is not knowing what to expect.
Your first appointment is straightforward.
We start by listening. What is the issue? How long has it been there? What makes it better or worse? What have you already tried?
From there, we assess how your feet and lower limbs function. Depending on the issue, this may include looking at joint range, muscle strength, investigating under ultrasound, walking patterns, or footwear.
Everything is explained in plain language. If there is a clear diagnosis, we will tell you. If imaging is needed, we can organise referrals. If your problem requires a specialist outside our scope, we will say so honestly.
Where possible, treatment will commence immediately. That might include footwear advice, load management, strengthening, nail care, taping, shockwave therapy, orthotics, or other conservative approaches.
You will leave understanding what is happening and what the plan is.
