Podiatry and Autism: How We Can Help

Updated: Jul 16, 2023

Podiatry may not be the first profession that comes to mind when you think about the health management of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), however there are a number of ways we can help. At My Family Podiatry we are lucky enough to assist many people across the autism spectrum with their unique foot and lower limb needs.

There are four main ways we are typically involved in the care of those with ASD:

  1. Assessment of foot posture and gait: Early assessment of foot posture and gait can help prevent long term pain and injury. Toe walking is a common gait presentation for those with ASD and can be related to their altered sensory processing. We can work with individuals and families to find ways of improving this gait pattern and reducing toe walking.

  2. Management of foot or leg pain through proper footwear and custom foot orthotics: Many individuals across the autism spectrum can struggle with foot and leg pain due to their altered gait or foot function. This can include issues such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon issues or knee pain. Altered sensory processing makes the management of these condition more difficult as finding the correct socks, shoes and orthotics that can be tolerated may require some trial and error. We work with the individual and their family to find a solution tailored to their needs and lifestyle.

  3. Routine foot and nail care and education on ongoing treatment: Some individuals with ASD can struggle with routine foot and nail care. This includes difficulty in correctly cutting or managing nails which can lead to issues such as ingrown toenails. We have significant experience working with individuals with ASD to treat these conditions and educate on ways of avoiding future issues.

  4. Collaboration with other allied health and medical professionals: At My Family Podiatry, we work closely with other health providers such as physiotherapists, OTs and GPs to ensure the best patient outcomes. This is to ensure holistic care and have the individual strong, capable and moving as well as we can.

My Family Podiatry are experienced in assisting individuals with ASD and their families to manage foot and lower limb health issues. We are registered to provide services for both self and plan managed NDIS participants, building their capacity and independence.
